JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTMAKING

Learn to make a Japanese woodblock print! The workshop begins with a hands-on printing demonstration from a prepared block using; water-based pigments, kento registration, and pressing with a baren – all hallmarks of this Japanese process dating back to the 17th century. We will then move into designing, carving, and printing our own designs with thorough demonstrations along the way. Please bring a 5” x 7” cartoon sketch for your one-color woodblock print. Sample designs will be available for beginners, advanced printmakers may use more than one color by using both sides of the block. All tools and materials are provided; please bring carving tools if you have a set. All levels are welcome.

BLOCK PRINTING

Develop relief printing skills in this class for beginners to advanced printmakers. Printing carved blocks is one of the oldest, simplest, and most versatile tools for reproducing art. Students will learn techniques of carving and printing linoleum and woodblocks, and benefit from our well-stocked collection of tools and equipment. BEGINNING PRINTMAKING

Immerse yourself in a variety of projects designed to teach you the history and practice of printmaking. Students will carve a simple rubber stamp and a linoleum block, learn about intaglio methods by completing drypoint and acid-etched plates, make a collagraph, and draw and print a simple plastic lithography plate.

PRINTMAKING AT HOME

Learn from home this spring and discover a variety of printmaking techniques that can be done using supplies you may already have at hand. Projects will include eraser carving, foam plate relief, gel plates, kitchen lithography, plastic drypoint, and screenprinting. Have fun using your printmaking skills to enhance all kinds of surfaces! You will be sent a supply list when you register for the class, and you can pick up a supply kit at the KIA if you wish.

SIMPLE BOOKMAKING

Imagine being able to make your own custom journals and sketchbooks! Printmaking Open Studio is designed for the experienced, independent artist/printmaker who would like to utilize our well-equipped printmaking studio. Enrollment includes storage and access to equipment during Open Studio Hours. Students must arrange to meet with the instructor the first week to review shop rules and safety. INTRO TO LITHOGRAPHY

Discover your drawings coming to life as reproducible prints. Students will begin with Pronto plate printing, one of the easiest and fastest printing processes. This course will also cover the more traditional lithographic media of aluminum plates and stones. Step-by-step instructions will take you through the basics of plate preparation and press operation. Enjoy drawing and printing your own image with the potential of creating an edition of your own prints.

Develop printmaking skills while learning new processes for intaglio and relief. Students will learn new techniques for adding texture and value to their intaglio plates, experiment with wood matrices through reduction carving and mokulito (wood lithography), and learn multi-color printing and registration techniques. There will also be time for work on independent projects. Bring previous prints, work-in-progress, sketches, and ideas to the first class.
